Stress has become a common phenomenon in this fast-paced, cruel world. Work pressures, societal expectations, and the hustle and bustle of daily life can take a toll on our mental health. That said, maintaining a calm and stress-free environment at home is crucial. Finding ways to destress, unwind, and let go of the worries of the day can contribute significantly to improving our overall health and well-being.

Incorporating simple destressing activities into your routine can serve as an antidote. Even if it’s as simple as immersing yourself in a soothing shower or losing yourself in the pages of a captivating book, these habits can be your haven amidst the chaos.

Here are some of my highly-recommended ways to destress at home.

Try journaling

As a writer, journaling is definitely my favorite way to destress at home. Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal notebook can help you better understand your stressors and how you react to them.

It’s a form of self-expression and self-therapy that, over time, can help you develop healthier coping mechanisms. A tip is to just be honest with yourself.

Take a long shower or bath

Taking a long, soothing shower or bath is one of the simplest ways to destress at home. These days, it’s what I look forward to on a Friday night.

I have read that the soothing sensation of warm water can help relieve physical tension, while the solitude provides a perfect space for reflection and calming the mind. I like playing some music and singing at the top of my lungs, but you can opt for calming, instrumental tunes especially if you’re relaxing in a bath.

You can also have fun with bath bombs, with a good book and some candles (more on these below). It sounds romantic but sometimes you need a me-time too.

I recommend purchasing shower or bath products infused with the relaxing scents of lavender or chamomile—perfect for turning your bathroom into a mini spa.

Read a book

Reading a book offers an incredible escape from the pressures of daily life. Choose a genre you love! It could be mystery, romance, science fiction, or personal development. Sometimes it can also be just a cute fact book about cats.

The key here is to immerse yourself in a different world, away from the stressors of your daily routine. Reading can be one of the most therapeutic destressing activities, offering both relaxation and intellectual stimulation.

Make art

If you’ve been reading my posts, you know I live and breathe art. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned artist or a beginner, there’s something quite soothing when creating art.

Painting is definitely one of my favorite ways to destress. You don’t necessarily have to paint a masterpiece; the process itself is therapeutic. Engaging in such a creative activity helps in expressing your emotions and thoughts that you may find challenging to put into words, hence lowering stress levels.

Some other art activities you can try include drawing, making a collage, scrapbooking, or you can also try those paint-by-number kits.

Meditate

Meditation, a practice that has been used for centuries to calm the mind and relieve stress, can also be conveniently done at home. I like combining it with different yoga poses, such as child’s pose and cobra pose, or if you really want an easy way—corpse pose and easy pose.

By focusing on your breath or a specific mantra, you can achieve a state of relaxation and mindfulness that reduces anxiety and enhances overall wellbeing. Regular practice can make this one of your most beneficial destressing activities.

It’s best to meditate in a clear space, of course. Or you can also try it in your backyard during summer.

Spend time with pets

Not that we don’t know it yet, but some playtime with your furry babies is a great way to destress at home.

Interacting with animals has been scientifically proven to lower stress levels and boost mood, even if it’s as simple as cuddling or brushing their fur. Their unconditional love and companionship can provide a sense of comfort and peace.

Listen to calming music

Music can transport your mind to a peaceful place, away from the noise and rush of the world. The soothing sounds, whether classical or instrumental, can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, helping you to feel more relaxed.

It doesn’t always have to be music, too. Ambient nature sounds, such as birds, waterfalls, rain, or the rustle of leaves can help a lot.

Get a good night’s sleep

Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a tranquil sleep environment are ways to ensure quality sleep, helping you wake up refreshed and ready to tackle any challenges the day might present.

I found that investing in a good pillow or mattress can significantly help you achieve that good night’s sleep.

Declutter and organize

There are two things that I’m known for: art and organizers. That said, when I’m not lost in some paints and a canvas, I’m just around decluttering as part of my destressing routine.

Decluttering your living space can have a surprisingly positive impact on your mental health. It’s about creating a serene, orderly environment that can encourage relaxation and productivity. Consider it a physical form of meditation, focusing on one task to achieve a satisfying result, making decluttering a practical way to destress at home.

I mean, who doesn’t like looking at color-coded books or pasta and cereals in clear containers?

Play an instrument

Playing an instrument is also a great stress reliever. Whether it’s a guitar, piano, or violin, creating music gives you a sense of accomplishment and takes your mind off worries.

Even if you are a beginner, the process of learning and making progress can be a fulfilling experience in itself.

I like playing the guitar and singing Taylor Swift songs, although I also enjoy playing ukulele and making some quirky lyrics myself. Just loosen up and have fun!

Light candles

Lighted candles

Lighting candles, especially scented ones, can create a soothing ambiance at home. The gentle flicker of the candle flame coupled with calming scents like lavender, jasmine, or vanilla can help create a peaceful environment, further enabling you to destress.

It took me a while to find a candle scent that I like, but I prefer freshly-baked scents from GooseCreek or anything vanilla from Bath & Body.

If you don’t have candles, just turn on your favorite night light—it helps!

Watch funny clips

Watching funny clips is a quick and effective way to destress. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, promoting an overall sense of well-being.

A short break to watch a hilarious video can reset your mood, making you feel lighter and happier. I personally like watching funny cat videos like this one.

Make your favorite drink

Tea

Whether it’s that occasional cocktail or tea or some smoothies, it’s always a good thing.

Making a smoothie in particular is not only a healthy habit, but it can also be a fun, stress-relieving activity. Experimenting with different fruits, veggies, and proteins can be an enjoyable way to unwind while also nourishing your body. It’s a simple and delicious way to destress at home.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage stress. Physical activities like walking, running, or even dancing release endorphins, the body’s natural mood boosters. Establishing a regular workout routine can contribute to your overall wellbeing and act as a powerful destressing activity.

If you don’t have the time for a full workout, walking in nature is the way to go.

Talk to a friend

If none of the above destressing activities worked, know that you don’t have to do it all alone. Talking to a friend or a loved one can help.

Sharing your thoughts and feelings, or even just catching up, can help you feel connected and understood, leading to a sense of relief. It’s one of the simplest yet most profound ways to destress.

Incorporating these activities into your daily or weekly routine can help you manage stress levels at home. Remember, it’s about finding what suits you best and helps you unwind after a long day.
